A Strawman Sox-tober

Happy Birthday, Dad!
Happy Birthday, Chris!

Happy Birthday, Elizabeth!

Matt and I have been enjoying watching the Red Sox come back from a 3-1 deficit in the ALCS series. World Series, here we come! Our shouts of jubilation from the apartment only create a mild disturbance in our normally quiet B-building. I was glad to finally see J.D Drew contribute in game 6. He still needs to prove himself to me. And I was also very pleased to see Jacoby Ellsbury out there in center field. I like Coco, but he just wasn't producing.

oh and what WAS Papelbon wearing during the after-series celebration? (my comment on this is delayed, I'll admit...but the broadcasters have been making a habit of showing Papelbon's dance during each game of the current series). It was disturbing to say the least. The combination of the tight biker shorts and the funky leg-lifting line dance was enough to make any faithful Sox fan wonder if the world was coming to an end. But they say he's a free spirit...

A house down the street has recently set up a strawman football game display. The pictures just don't do it justice.

We had a full house this past week. Not only did we receive a visit from the Moran family (who knew that you could have so much fun in a hotel?!), but we were also visited by Dusty, Morgan and Eponine Ledden and Erica Murray- rec therapist/ropes course extraordinare. :-)

The Morans experienced first hand the joys of driving around the North Shore and the exhilaration that comes with regaling the parents with Andy Griffith memories, riding elevators and enjoying continental breakfasts.

The Leddens experienced first hand the horror of visiting Matt and Laurel when they have no food in the house and the delicious delights that can be found at the Depot Diner.

Erica experienced first hand yet another sharing session with Laurel (yay!) and the joys of sleeping on our comfy couch with the lumpy pillow.

Good times. :-)

This week Matt and I traveled to the nearby town of Essex- a tired, quaint old town with antique shops, boats, and Woodmans - the fried food palace.
Matt and I both got dinner plates:

Top layer: fried onion rings
Middle layer: fried clams/fried popcorn shrimp
Bottom layer: fries

Anyone up for sampling such a healthy fare? It's open year round.

The Fall colors are in full force right now- making the picturesque scenes of the North Shore even more picturesque (seemingly not possible until this week).

Thanks to this oddly warm Fall, Matt has been enjoying more rounds of golf at the local courses. And after enjoying and utilizing his first reading week, Matt has been busy conquering Greek (he is very diligent!) while I have been busy conquering the irate customers at the bank.

Non-irate customer of the week:

Frank- The 75ish short Italian man who wears polo shirts unbuttoned to show his big gold necklaces and his profuse amount of chest hair. He chews a pipe (quite vigorously at times) and wears black glasses (with silver rhinestones on the edge). A cool eccentric type and very endearing- especially when he calls us "toots" (who knew that word was used anymore?!)

We are highly anticipating a visit from Mom and Dad Hoffman this weekend!

Seized like an armed man

Just a quick thought here - I just finished a Reading Week and have been slogging my way through Evangelical Theology, an introduction to theology given by Karl Barth, in 1963, near the end of his life.

Barth's prose is what I'd call "turgid," and I'm glad that this book is nowhere near as long as his four volume, Church Dogmatics. But there are more than a few nuggets packed into this book, including a chapter called "Wonder" that, should I ever have my own pulpit, I intend to return to.

"If anyone should not find himself astonished and filled with wonder when he becomes involved in one way or another with theology, he would be well advised to consider once more ... what is involved in this undertaking. ...as long as even a poor theologian is capable of astonishment, he is not lost to the fulfillment of his task. He remains serviceable as long as the possibility is left open that astonishment may seize him like an armed man."

We tend to like and feel comfortable with what we can explain. But is that what we worship? I think that is what Barth is getting at. Theology is - or should be -more about awe than it is about quantifying and categorizing the Ineffable.

Birthdays, Boston, and the Bills

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DAVID!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, IAN!

Laurel:

Last week we went to Crane Beach- a gorgeous beach with dunes and waving grass (very CA like). But…the water was like ICE. We ventured in up to our ankles but could not bear to go in any further (very un-CA like).

We also recently traveled into Boston and walked the Freedom Trail- a 3 mile trail through the city (follow the red brick road!) where you can see a bunch of historic sites and see the city at the same time. We saw the famous Park Street church (under construction), The Paul Revere House, the burial sites of multiple famous people and the Bunker Hill monument (among other things).

This week we are highly anticipating a visit from the Moran family!!

I am still really enjoying my job at the bank. Georgetown Savings Bank throws a great party. Thus far we have had three.

And to honor the Division winning Red Sox (!!!!), all three branches are in the midst of an intense Red Sox trivia game. The winners will be announced and prizes awarded at the Red Sox party luncheon held on Thursday (party #4).

Customer Quirks:

Names are not real- partly to respect privacy, largely because I do not know their names yet.

Fred- the former prize fighter who formerly won the Golden Gloves.

Megan- the he-woman who has massive arms and talks about crushing her male competition in the weight room. She happens to have a crush on Joe- another bank customer…causing her to get very giddy when they happen to be in the bank at the same time.

Bob- the man who is trying to convert all of my co-workers to Christianity- sadly, his loud and rather obnoxious methods turn them off more than anything. But to give him credit, his words have provoked other meaningful conversations about who Jesus really is and what He’s all about.

James (Bob’s father)- the walking joke machine. His transaction might take 1 minute, but he’ll be in the bank for 20+ minutes telling us jokes.

John- the young construction worker who recently asked for 2 dog biscuits. He proceeded to eat the dog biscuits- alternating his chomps with licks on a raspberry blue lollipop. After sticking out his tongue to show us the dog biscuit residue (and causing a minor ruckus in the bank), he asked my co-worker for her number. …needless to say, he was turned down.

Congrats to the Buffalo Bills for winning their first game! Watch out J.P- here comes Trent Edwards!
